Depression is a chronic illness that needs treatment. Depression can range from mild to severe. Treatment for depression includes medications, psychological therapy and alternative therapies such as herbs. You should not treat severe depression with herbs -- seek professional medical treatment. Consult a doctor before using herbs to treat a condition.

Depression

Symptoms of depression include feelings of sadness, loss of interest in normal activities, changes in sleep or appetite, decreased concentration, fatigue, unexplained physical problems and feelings of worthlessness. Treatment for major depression usually consists of antidepressants and talk therapy. Alternative treatments include the use of herbs, supplements, exercise, light therapy, yoga and acupuncture.

St. John's Wort

St. John's wort, or Hypericum perforatum, can be as effective as medication for mild to moderate depression. St. John's wort may act similarly to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, SSRIs, a class of medications commonly used to treat depression, by increasing neurotransmitters that are linked to depression including serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. St. John's wort can cause sensitivity to sunlight, upset stomach, hives and fatigue. St. John's wort also interacts with many medications including other antidepressants such as SSRIs and monoamine oxidase inhibitors, allergy medications, birth control pills and more.

Valerian

Valerian is a plant that originated in Europe and Asia. Although research is inconclusive, the root of the valerian plant can ease depression, anxiety, sleep disorders and headaches. Sleep disorders and anxiety are common in depression. The proposed mechanism of action for valerian is increasing GABA in the brain, a biochemical that plays a role in depression and anxiety. Side effects of valerian include headaches and dizziness.

Ginko Biloba

Ginko biloba can treat mood disturbances, headaches and Alzheimer's disease. It also increases circulation and enhance memory. Gingko biloba may decrease symptoms of depression in Alzheimer's patients. Ginko biloba contains antioxidants, which may help destroy free radicals in the body that contribute to chronic diseases such as cancer and dementia. You should not take ginko biloba with SSRIs, as it can increase depressive symptoms.
