If you're trying to lose weight, changing your diet is a better idea than starving yourself. By making smart diet choices, you can lose weight without feeling hungry and without risking your health and nutrition in the process. Aside from changing your food choices, pay also attention to what you're drinking. When trying to lose weight, avoid anything with added sugar, including sodas and juices. Stop drinking alcohol or keep it to a minimum.

Step 1

Eliminate all simple carbs from your cupboards and fridge. This includes sweets, white grains such as white rice and bread, sugary cereals and sodas. Anything made with white flour should also be eliminated. Instead, choose whole wheat and whole grain products that release sugar into your body more slowly and are better for weight loss.

Step 2

Stop going to fast-food restaurants. Most of the food available there is high in fats, calories or sugars. Instead, eat at places where you can customize your menu, replace items for lower-fat options and refuse certain ingredients and add-ons.

Step 3

Avoid fried, deep-fried and breaded foods. Anything with the words batter, creamy or refried on it is also out, as it will contain more calories than foods baked or grilled. If eating out, ask for your salad dressing to be served on the side, so you can control how much you add to the dish. Many dressings are high in oils or sugars.

Step 4

Stop buying high-fat snacks such as chips, buttered popcorn and cured meats. They are high in fats and sodium. Sodium can cause you to retain water, slowing down weight loss. Instead, choose baked snacks, air-popped plain popcorn and fruit as snacks.
