Breastfeeding mothers occasionally deal with supply issues. If you've been having trouble making enough milk for your child, certain foods act to stimulate milk production and may help you address your supply issues. If you continue to have issues with your milk supply after adding these foods to your diet, consult your physician or a lactation consultant for assistance.

Alfalfa

Alfalfa is a mild-tasting plant that acts as a natural galactagogue, increasing the supply of breast milk. Alfalfa leaves and flowers can be steeped as a tea. Alternatively, alfalfa seeds can be sprouted and the sprouts can be consumed in salads, stir-fry dishes or sandwiches.

Oats

The breastfeeding website Kellymom.com states that oatmeal may help to increase milk supply. Oatmeal can be consumed in many forms and is easy to add to your daily routine. Try hot oatmeal for breakfast, oatmeal cookies or oat bars.

Increased Fluids

Dehydration can lead to decreased milk supply. If you're having trouble with milk production, upping your fluids may help. Add water, juice and herbal tea to your diet at regular intervals, and you may see an increase in milk production. Avoid caffeinated beverages, as they have a diuretic effect and may make the situation worse.

Barley and Barley Water

Barley may also help increase milk supply. This grain can be cooked and eaten as a hot cereal. Barley can also be steeped in water to make an infusion known as barley water.

Fennel

Fennel, an herb commonly used in cooking, can be used to increase breast milk production. Add the seeds to food or steep them to make a breastfeeding tea. Commercial breastfeeding teas featuring fennel seed are also available. Fennel should be used only for one to two weeks, as it is a strong galactagogue.

Healthy Fats

Foods that contain healthy, natural fats may also help the body to produce more breast milk. Nuts, such as cashews and peanuts, avocados, sunflower oil and olive oil are all high-quality sources of natural fats.
