The thyroid is a small gland located at the lower part of the neck. Part of the endocrine system, the thyroid is responsible for secreting hormones that regulate body temperature and energy. When the thyroid is not functioning properly, serious thyroid disorders can occur. A regular yoga practice can improve the functioning of the thyroid glands. As with any new exercise routine, consult your doctor first.

Bridge Pose

Bridge pose, or setu bandha sarvangasana, stimulates the thyroid. While lying on your back, bend your knees and lift your pelvis off the floor. Relax your neck and position the arms with your palms facing up. Hold the pose for 30 to 60 seconds and repeat twice.

Intense Back Stretch

Intense back stretch, or paschimottanasana, relaxes the thyroid gland, according to yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar. While in a seated position, stretch both legs in front of you. Place a yoga bolster on your legs and bend forward, reaching for your toes. Relax your head on the bolster. If your hands cannot reach your toes, relax your arms on the bolster as well. Hold the pose for five minutes.

Plow Pose

Plow pose, or halasana, improves the functioning of the thyroid gland, says Iyengar. This pose is best practiced under the guidance of an experienced teacher to avoid cervical spine injury. Lie on your back with a folded towel under the shoulder blades and your head on the floor. Lift your legs up and over the head, toes curled under on the floor above you head. Stretch your arms in the opposite direction and interlock your fingers. Stay in the pose for three minutes.

Full Boat Pose

Full boat pose, or paripurna navasana, is a core strengthening pose that stimulates the thyroid gland. Start in a seated position and lift both legs and the upper body until you are forming a v-shape. Stretch both arms toward the knees. If straightening the legs is too difficult, you may slightly bend the knees. Hold for up to one minute, take a break and repeat twice.
