Lasik Eye Surgery Facts

LASIK eye surgery is a surgical procedure in which lasers are used to reshape the thin layer of the eye called the cornea. This can dramatically improve vision. According to Medline Plus, LASIK eye surgery is a quick outpatient procedure that takes only 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

Purpose

According to Eye Care America, LASIK eye surgery is indicated for people with farsightedness (problems seeing nearby), nearsightedness (problems seeing at a distance) and astigmatism (abnormal corneal curvature).

Procedure

Medline Plus states that your doctor will use a microtome (special knife) to cut a layer of your cornea. He will flap over a thin layer of the cornea and use lasers to reshape the remaining layers to correct your vision. After the procedure, the flap is replaced and your eye will be protected with an eye shield.

Risks

Eye Care America indicates that risks for LASIK eye surgery include infection, unimproved vision, discomfort, dryness and light sensitivity.

Criteria

In order to have LASIK eye surgery, you must be at least 18 years old and in good health with a stable eye prescription. According to Medline Plus, you should not undergo this procedure if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking certain medications, such as prednisone.

Other Names

LASIK is also known as laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis and laser vision correction surgery.
