The integumentary system represents the largest organ system in your body. Composed of your skin, hair and nails, the integumentary system forms a barrier, protecting your internal organs from the environment. The waterproof layer hinders the ability of infectious particles to enter your body, protects your internal organs from chemicals and harsh weather and helps regulate your internal body temperature. Several vitamins and minerals contribute to the health of the system.
Vitamin A
One vitamin that benefits your integumentary system is vitamin A, also called retinol. The University of Maryland Medical Center indicates that applying vitamin A and vitamin A-derivative creams can treat psoriasis, acne, skin wrinkles, liver spots and roughness. However, many creams containing vitamin A remain unregulated by the Food and Drug Administration, and you should consult with a physician to choose a product to effectively benefit your skin.
Vitamin C
Another vitamin that aids in maintaining your integumentary system is vitamin C, or ascorbic acid. The tissues that make up your integumentary system all contain the protein collagen, a structural protein that strengthens tissues. The loss of collagen leads to a loss of your skin's elasticity, leading to wrinkles and sagging, and may also impair your skin's ability to heal properly. Vitamin C contributes to the formation of collagen.
Calcium
Your skin constantly generates new cells. As old, dead cells on the surface of your skin slough away, newer cells deeper in your skin rise to the surface to take their place. Calcium plays an essential role in regulating cell division in these deeper layers of skin.
Copper
Your integumentary system contains specialized cells called melanocytes. These cells produce melanin, a black-brown pigment protein that gives your skin and hair their color. It also plays a role in protecting against the sun's ultraviolet rays. The essential mineral copper proves beneficial to your integumentary system by promoting the production of melanin.
