Elliptical trainers come with a variety of features and can vary greatly in price. With so many options, it can be difficult to know which elliptical is best. Before deciding on an elliptical, determine what types of workouts you enjoy doing and the type of features you need.

Precor EFX 5.33

The Precor EFX 5.33 was named "best elliptical machine" by All Ellipticals. From the various brands tested, the EFX 5.33 was rated as the best value and most versatile. The elliptical features an LED color monitor, 14 preset programs and 20 different resistance levels, as well as a heart-rate monitor. Its adjustable incline ranges from 15 to 30 degrees, and the stride length can be elongated from 21 to 23 inches. The EFX 5.33 frame accommodates heavy loads, which is covered under the trainer's 10-year parts warranty.

NordicTrack AudioStrider 990 PRO

NordicTrack's AudioStrider 990 PRO was awarded Fitness-Equipment-Source's "Best Buy 2011" award for low-priced elliptical trainers. The 990 PRO computer connects to the online iFit Live program, which simulates real-life training and keeps track of a personalized fitness program. A power incline is adjustable from 10 to 30 degrees and stride lengths can be increased from 18 to 20 inches. A cooling fan and oversize foot pedals are included, and the 990 PRO features a space-saving fold-up design.

Smooth CE 7.4

Elliptical Trainers named the Smooth CE 7.4 as a midrange-priced elliptical trainer "best buy." The CE 7.4 features ergonomic foot pedals, a heavy-duty flywheel and a roller-less elliptical mechanism that aim to promote a smooth, natural stride. The CE 7.4 has 16 resistance levels and you can choose a workout from the computer's eight preset programs. Extra-resistance arm handles work the upper body. The trainer comes with a lifetime frame and braking-system warranty.

Sole E35

Consumer Search named the Sole E35 as one of the "best buys" for elliptical trainers. The elliptical received high marks for its sturdy frame. The elliptical stride length on the E35 is 20 inches, and its computer controls the incline feature during the eight preset programs. Other features include 20 resistance levels, built-in speakers, heart-rate monitor and an MP3 player docking station. The trainer has a lifetime frame warranty and includes two years of labor service.
