Cerebral palsy is a condition that affects movement, muscle tone and posture. This condition is caused by injury or abnormal development of the brain that usually occurs prior to birth. Cerebral palsy is associated with exaggerated reflexes of the limbs, involuntary movements and unsteadiness while walking. By participating in exercise, individuals with cerebral palsy can increase strength, mobility, coordination and flexibility and enjoy more individual and social activities. Contact your physician prior to beginning exercise.

Step 1

Stretch. Stretching the arms, legs and torso is extremely beneficial for individuals with cerebral palsy. Stretching can help to promote normal joint function. Stretching can also prepare you for more intense workouts.

Step 2

Cycle. Riding a stationary bike is beneficial for heart health as well as strengthening your lower extremities.

Step 3

Swim. Swimming helps to promote flexibility in individuals with cerebral palsy. Swimming focuses on joint movement while keeping weight and strain off of your joints and bones.

Step 4

Dance. Dancing is an aerobic activity that increases breathing, circulation and mobility.

Tips and Warnings

  • You should participate in exercise three to five times week. The duration of each exercise session should be 20 to 30 minutes per day. Visit with a physical therapist. A physical therapist can help to decide on an exercise program to meet individualized goals as well as provide you with principles and techniques to help make the most of your exercise program.
  • If you experience light headedness, excessive fatigue, nausea, severe joint pain, chest pain, muscle pain or breathing difficulties, discontinue exercise and consult your physician prior to resuming an exercise program.
