How to Take Yohimbine

Yohimbine hydrochloride is a prescription medication used for dilating the pupils of the eye, but physicians often prescribe it for treating specific types of erectile dysfunction. Men experiencing impotence related to problems with blood vessels, diabetes or for psychological reasons may benefit from taking yohimbine. This medication works by increasing chemicals in the body that are responsible for dilating blood vessels. The prescription drug may also work as an aphrodisiac, according to RxList. Yohimbine is the active ingredient from the evergreen tree called yohimbe, which grows in portions of western Africa.

Step 1

Speak with your doctor about the potential positive and negative effects that may occur when taking yohimbine. Obtain a prescription for the medication.

Step 2

Follow all instructions given by your physician or pharmacist regarding the dosage and frequency of taking yohimbine hydrochloride. A common dosage and frequency prescribed for treating erectile dysfunction is one 5.4 mg tablet three times daily, according to RxList. Cut the dosage in half, according to the instructions given by your doctor, if you experience excessive side effects, such as nausea and dizziness, and gradually increase to a full tablet.

Step 3

Swallow the medication with a full glass of water and with or without food.

Step 4

Watch for potential adverse reactions associated with taking yohimbine hydrochloride. Common side effects of the medication include dizziness, tremors, headache, flushed skin and anxiety. Symptoms of overdose include high blood pressure -- characterized by a severe headache, flushing and blurred vision -- as well as an increase in heart rate. Additional overdose symptoms include a runny nose, poor coordination, numbness and tingling, confusion, and abnormal behavior. Report any serious side effects to your physician immediately.

Step 5

Avoid using yohimbine if you are female -- especially if you are pregnant -- and if you take a medication to treat depression or psychiatric conditions. Use the medication cautiously if you suffer from high blood pressure because of the potential to worsen the condition.

Step 6

Use caution when operating heavy machinery and when driving if you experience dizziness when taking yohimbine, before you know how the medication affects you. Avoid these activities if you are dizzy.

Step 7

Take the medication for 10 weeks or less, unless your doctor prescribes a longer treatment schedule.
