Boxing training programs are designed to introduce new boxers to the sport of boxing as well as aid established boxers wishing to raise their skill level. While programs and coaching styles may vary from gym to gym, the primary focus of a boxing training program is on teaching boxers how to use proper form when throwing punches and how to apply different types of defensive boxing tactics. In addition, programs can offer great weight loss opportunities.
Program Structure
Boxing training programs are designed from a basic outline that assures that an athlete is properly warmed up and stretched before a workout and that a correct cool down and stretching period is are used after a session. Warmups often include calisthenics such as push ups, crunches and burpees. Following a warmup, an athlete participates in several types of drills by themselves and against a partner. During the cooldown, lighter punches are used and the body is stretched once again.
Equipment
You may encounter several pieces of boxing equipment in a boxing training program. The most common piece of equipment in a boxing gym is a heavy bag, this is used to practice correct punching technique and to build muscular endurance in the shoulders. You may find a smaller bag fastened to a wooden platform called a speed bag that helps to build hand speed and accuracy. Your coach may use focus mitts, pads that can be attached to his hands with hook and loop tape to help you work on specific punches.
Safety
Boxing makes every attempt to provide a safe and enjoyable workout for all practitioners of the sport. Typically boxers will wear a 16-oz. glove that protects the bones of the hand and supports the wrist while throwing punches. For active participation drills against a partner you may be asked to wear a 16-oz. headgear face protector and a warm water molded mouth piece. Foul protectors help to protect the kidney's and genitals from accidental fouls.
Sparring
As part of your boxing training program you may be asked to participate in a sparring session. In a sparring session you will use the skills you have learned throughout the training program in a mock competition setting featuring official 2 minute long rounds with a minute of rest between each round. Your skills will be tested as well as your ability to be coached while in the ring. If you do not properly protect yourself your coach may choose to end the sparring session.
