The weight-loss industry is big business, especially in the United States. In fact, the Federal Trade Commission estimates that Americans collectively spend about $35 billion a year on weight-loss products and services, as of 2000. Holistic weight-loss programs, however, do not promote a one-size-fits-all approach to healthy weight management. Instead, they focus on meeting the needs of the whole person to develop habits for a lifetime of health, not just fast weight loss.

Metabolic Balance

Obstetrician and gynecologist Marcelle Pick equates a state of having core metabolic balance with having a well-kept house. Much like the residents of a home that is well-organized and free of clutter are able to function better, optimal metabolism relies on each of your internal systems counterbalancing each other. Otherwise, if hormonal imbalance, adrenal insufficiency, impaired digestion or other conditions exist that can slow down your metabolism, weight loss will be difficult. If you suspect that you may have an imbalance or even a food sensitivity, consult a holistic practitioner or nutritionist for a complete evaluation.

Nutrition

A holistic weight-loss program is more aligned with teaching you how to eat for life rather than how to lose pounds and inches quickly with gimmicks or special foods and shakes. The key to success is to avoid highly processed foods and refined flours and sugars in favor of whole, natural foods. This means plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, with moderate amounts of whole grains. Although lean meats and fish are acceptable, try to get more protein from plant-based sources, such as beans and nuts.

Body Wisdom

Dr. Jane Mountrose, author of the booklet, "The Holistic Approach To Eating: Lose Extra Weight And Keep It Off For Life," suggests that you become more aware of your body's inner wisdom and listen to what your body is telling you. With practice, she says, you can learn what foods your body needs and when you truly need to eat. Likewise, be more conscious of your impulse to eat in response to stress or other triggers and look for healthier ways to answer these needs, such as taking a walk. This open-communication system can help you avoid some of the speed bumps that deter you from reaching your weight-loss goals, without resorting to self-doubt and judgment.

Success Recognition

You might be surprised to learn that a holistic weight-loss program does not weigh success by the number you see when you step on the scale. Weighing yourself periodically can be helpful to keep you on target, but it's not necessary to weigh yourself every day to record the slightest change. Instead, pay attention to how you feel -- not just physically, but about yourself emotionally. This is a better reflection of your progress and the reward with which to mirror your future success.
