The American Cancer Society describes quercetin as a flavonoid, which is a plant-based chemical that is found in red wine, apples and other foods. As a supplement, it has been used to help treat a variety of conditions. It may be combined with bromelain, which also acts as an anti-inflammatory. Before using quercetin as a supplement or to help treat any medical condition, consult your health care provider to determine if this is safe for you to use.
Step 1
Consume 100 to 250mg of quercetin three times daily for general supplementation. Quercetin contains flavonoids, which are antioxidants that protect cells from damage. This supplement may help reduce levels of LDL cholesterol, thus reducing the risk of heart disease. The American Cancer Society adds that quercetin also contains anti-inflammatory properties and may even help slow the growth of certain cancer cells, although more research needs to be done in this area.
Step 2
Take 250 to 600mg of this supplement divided into multiple doses throughout the day to treat allergy symptoms. Laboratory studies found that this supplement prevents histamines from being released, which can help reduce allergy symptoms. Human studies need to be done to verify this.
Step 3
Take 500mg twice a day for chronic prostatitis or interstitial cystitis. Small studies have been done in people with these conditions; people with either condition found symptom relief from taking quercetin. However, larger studies need to be performed to establish a definitive link between this supplement and symptom relief.
Tips and Warnings
- Dietary sources of flavonoids and quercetin include grapes, citrus fruits, apples, parsley, onions, olive oil, cherries and grapes.
- Do not take more than 1mg of quercetin a day without your doctor's instructions to do so. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, reports of kidney damage have occurred when taking more than 1mg a day. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, as well as people with kidney disease should not take this supplement. Talk to your health care provider before taking quercetin and tell him about any other medications or supplements you are taking, as quercetin can interfere with this and cause adverse interactions.
