The food pyramid goes through changes every so often as we better understand our dietary needs. Recently, the U.S. Department of Agriculture changed the way the food pyramid was shaped, changing it from a design that looked like blocks comprising a pyramid into something that looked like pie slices from the pyramid. Although this makes the pyramid more difficult for children to draw, you can still color coordinate the sections so the pyramid can be easily understood.
Step 1
Draw a triangle with a peak at the top.
Step 2
Inside the triangle, draw a line from the peak of the triangle down to the base, creating a sliver that is about one-fifth the width of the pyramid at its base. This should be on the left-hand side of the pyramid. Color the inside of this slice orange. This represents the grains.
Step 3
Draw a line straight down from the peak to the base. Between this line and the grains section, color it in green. This represents vegetables.
Step 4
Make another section next to the vegetables section slightly smaller than the green. Color it in red. This represents fruits.
Step 5
Make a barely visible sliver next to the red section and color it yellow. This represents sweets and fats, which should only be eaten sparingly.
Step 6
Draw a line to make another section as big as the vegetables section and color it in blue. This represents dairy.
Step 7
Color in the remaining white space inside the triangle purple. This is meats and beans.
