When you are dieting, it can seem like you are focused more on the foods you are not allowed to eat, rather than the large variety of foods on your diet plan. Your grocery store is filled with healthy choices for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks that easily conform to the principles of your diet, so that you can lose weight while still enjoying food. Bring a grocery list along that can help you locate the right foods to eat so that you have them on hand at home and are less likely to fall off of the diet wagon.
Vegetables
Vegetables are a staple of just about any diet. Low in carbohydrates, fat and calories, vegetables can be prepared in different ways so that they are more flavorful and enjoyable. Make sure to get some baby carrots for quick snacking with hummus, peppers to add to dishes to give them extra flavor and cucumbers and celery to add to salads. The Mayo Clinic notes that eating fiber-rich foods like vegetables can help you stay fuller longer, causing you to consume less calories overall and lose the weight faster.
Fruit
Fruit can help someone with a sweet tooth get through the daily sugar cravings. Some fruits are sweet and full of fiber, making you feel like you are having a treat. Mangoes, pineapple and watermelon are all good fruits to purchase and indulge in. Berries can be mixed in smoothies or yogurt for a satisfying breakfast and, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging, berries like blueberries, blackberries and raspberries have the highest antioxidant activity.
Whole Grains
It is important to recognize that whole grains and whole wheat flour are two different items. Whole grains are foods that use the entire grain of wheat--the germ, bran and endosperm--in the food, giving it more nutrition and better fiber, with less fatty and refined ingredients. Whole grain varieties of rice, bread and pasta can be enjoyed on many diets.
Protein
Choose lean cuts of protein that will help you build muscle tissue without fattening your body and clogging your arteries, like fatty meats can do. Boneless, skinless chicken breast should be a must on any dieter's list, but lean cuts of fish like salmon and trout are also good choices. Eggs or egg whites are low-calorie foods that can be used for a number of breakfast foods to start your day.
Dairy
Dairy products make for good snacks and can actually help you to lose weight. The National Dairy Council recommends three servings of dairy per day for better weight loss. Low fat cheese sticks, yogurt and cottage cheese should all be on your list because they make for quick and healthy snacks that will not derail your entire diet.
