If you want to hold officially sanctioned volleyball matches, make sure that you have the right dimensions for your volleyball court and net. The regulations for Olympic and collegiate volleyball are the same, and although some high schools may have different regulations, most follow the same guidelines for Olympic or collegiate play.
Court Dimensions
The volleyball court should be 59 feet long by 29 feet 6 inches wide (18 m by 9 m). The court can be made of paneled wood or a solid rubber composite. There should be additional clearance around the playing area that is 10 feet widthwise and 15 feet lengthwise. The court is then divided into different segments with court lines.
Court Lines
The center line is painted directly in the mid-court; it's 29 feet 6 inches away from both the beginning and the end of the length of the court. The two attack lines are placed parallel to each other on opposing sides of the court. These lines are 9 feet 10 inches lengthwise away from the center line on each side of the divided court.
Net
The net should be 39 inches tall and span the full length of the mid-line from sideline to sideline. Typically, nets are 31 feet 2 inches in length, as the attachment poles are placed just outside of the field of play. There should be white canvas or vinyl along the top of the net that's at least 2 to 3 1/8 inches in height. The height of the net, measured from the court to the top of the net, should be 7 feet 4 1/8 inches.
Considerations
A referee's platform is required for regulation play and needs to be adjustable to accommodate the referee. The referee's eye-line should be placed 19 inches above the top of the netting so that there is a clear line of sight between the ref and net. To ensure that overhead obstructions do not interfere with play, there should be a height clearance of 41 feet above the playing surface. For facilities constructed after 2006, 25 feet of height clearance is sufficient.
