Consider joining a baseball team if you're looking for a fun physical activity. Playing baseball is a pastime for some, and a serious endeavor for others. Join a team that matches your skill level so that you won't feel overwhelmed. If possible, include friends to make the activity more fun.

Tradition

Baseball is a signature part of U.S. culture. Many major cities have professional teams that draw large crowds to their games. The World Series championship is a huge event, and people often throw parties or visit their favorite bars to root for their team. The popularity of such baseball movies as "Field of Dreams," "Bull Durham" and "The Natural" demonstrates the importance of baseball to the American public. Although baseball is not as popular worldwide as sports like football -- or soccer, as Americans call it -- other countries now have professional baseball leagues and large fan bases. Japan, for example, has thriving baseball leagues, and many top players on U.S. teams come from South America.

Fitness

Baseball, like other team sports, is an effective way for you to get regular exercise. Running the bases, hitting and catching the ball, and other baseball activities provide healthy physical exercise. While playing baseball is not as vigorous an activity as, say, participating in a high-impact aerobics class, it is a fun exercise option, which is important because not enjoying a physical activity makes you less likely to continue with it.

Benefits for Children

Children benefit from baseball because it introduces them to an important part of their culture and encourages healthy physical activity. Youth baseball leagues provide a safe environment for kids to learn the game. Youth sports participation teaches children how to get along with one another, develops physical coordination, helps them maintain a healthy weight, and shows them how to compete safely and effectively.

Considerations

Adults who want to start playing baseball can join an amateur league. Check your local library, community center or place of worship for amateur league announcements. If necessary, invite a group of friends to join you at a local field for a casual game. If you plan to enroll a child in a youth baseball league, research several and ask for information about requirements and fees. If possible, talk to parents who already have children in a league to learn how well it functions. Another option is to encourage your child to join a school team.
