Facts About Exercise Bikes

Exercise bikes are fun, healthy and simple to use. Throughout history, the models of exercise bikes have changed dramatically. Now there are many different types to choose from, depending on your goals and experience. While many people ride bikes just for fun, there are many health and fitness benefits of an exercise bike.

History

In 1696, French mathematician Jacques Ozanam searched for a vehicle powered by a human. Ozanam published a book, "Recreations Mathematiques et Physiques," featuring a design by Elie Richard for a self-steered carriage. This form of a bicycle was altered throughout the centuries to evolve into the modern bicycle and exercise bike.

Function

The function of an exercise bike is to work out your lower body and sometimes the upper body, too, without having to ride outdoors.

Types

There are many types of exercise bikes: upright, recumbent, semi-recumbent and dual action. An upright bike is similar to a regular bicycle, while recumbent bikes prevent standing due to their bucket-like seats. Dual action bikes feature movable bars that work out your lower as well as upper body.

Features

Unlike bulky workout equipment, the exercise bike is small and lightweight. This makes the bike easy to store and move. Many exercise bikes also collect data, such as distance traveled and heart rate.

Benefits

Riding an exercise bike is good for your health. It benefits the heart, lungs, upper and lower muscle groups. Another benefit from riding an exercise bike is burning calories.
