Weight loss makes you feel better and improves your health, but staying motivated to achieve those benefits is challenging. A variety of motivational tools help you stay focused on your weight-loss plan and achieve your weight-related goals. Experiment with different ways to motivate yourself to find the option that is most effective.

Visual Reminders

Visual motivational tools serve as a reminder of your weight-loss goals and your progress. Before and after photos are a simple visual motivator. Take front view and side view photos of yourself at the beginning of the weight-loss journey and periodically as you lose weight. The pictures document your success and help you stay on track so you continue losing weight. Another option is to create a collage of images that represent your weight-loss goals. For example, include a picture of a person running a marathon if running a race is one of your goals related to weight loss. Articles of clothing also work as visual reminders. Keep a pair of your old pants so you can see how far you have come once you start losing weight. A similar option is to display a pair of your skinny jeans that you used to wear but outgrew. Seeing the jeans motivates you to lose weight so you can fit into them again.

Break It Down

A goal to lose a large amount of weight seems overwhelming if you only look at the big picture. To make weight loss more realistic and motivating, break down your overall goals into smaller process goals. By achieving smaller short-term goals, you motivate yourself to continue with your efforts. Each step you complete gets you closer to your end weight-loss goal.

Rewards

A reward system offers additional motivators beyond the reward of a smaller waist size. As you reach your smaller weight-loss goals, reward yourself with a small treat. Avoid using food as a reward. Instead, give yourself a treat like an article of clothing in your new size or a pampering session at your favorite spa. Choose rewards that help you feel better or renew your motivation to keep you moving forward with the weight loss.

Technology

Electronic gadgets and technology advancements allow you to connect with people instantly no matter where you are. This instant access to your network also means you have access to a support system for your exercise and weight loss. If you feel like skipping a workout, send your personal trainer or exercise-fanatic friend a text message. Use Twitter or Facebook to receive support from friends and acquaintances if you're stressed and ready to eat something you shouldn't. Keep yourself connected with acquaintances who are supportive, motivating and knowledgeable about losing weight.
