Fish oil supplements can cause a minor rash as a common side effect. Keeping the supplement in the refrigerator or freezer before taking it may decrease this side effect. If you develop severe skin itching associated with a visible rash, you may be experiencing an allergic reaction to the supplement. Any time you introduce a new substance into your diet, there's the potential of developing an allergic reaction. You're more likely to have an allergic reaction if you have a fish allergy or any other food-related allergy. All adverse reactions need to be reported to your doctor.

Common Side Effects

Side effects from taking fish oil pills may include chest pain, fever, chills, flu-like symptoms, body aches, uneven heartbeats, back pain, mild rashes, upset stomach and an unpleasant taste in your mouth, according to Drugs.com. Many of these symptoms are similar to an allergic reaction and will require further evaluation from a medical doctor. If you develop these side effects, discontinue use of the supplement until further assessment from your physician.

Fish Allergy Reaction

Fish oil supplements do not contain fish proteins that trigger a fish allergy, but protein by-products may be present in the supplement and should therefore be avoided. If you have a known fish allergy, you should talk with your health-care provider before taking fish oil supplements. Common symptoms of a fish allergy include skin irritation, swelling, asthma, shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, nasal congestion, sinus pressure, diarrhea, vomiting and nausea.

Allergic Skin Rashes

Allergic skin rashes may develop from taking fish oil supplements if you have a fish allergy. MayoClinic.com states that hives and eczema are two common skin rashes that can form as a result of a fish allergy. Hives and eczema are both very itchy and cause inflammation and swelling in the skin. Hives form in clusters in various shapes and sizes and are flat on top. They can come and go without any cause and migrate from one area to another on the body.

Concern

Fish allergy can cause anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. One of the first signs of a fish allergy is hives. Hives that form along with facial swelling, shortness of breath and lightheadedness are an alarming symptom. Call 911 or visit the emergency room for immediate medical attention. Anaphylaxis can lead to serious complications, including death.
