The aloe vera plant contains spiny leaves filled with a gel, and can be grown as a houseplant. As a remedy, aloe has been used since ancient Egyptian times to treat skin problems and infections. Aloe vera gel can be taken directly from the plant, or used in commercial preparations. Sometimes the gel is used as a laxative, but this can be dangerous, and should only be used under the care of a professional.
Step 1
Break off aloe leaves from the aloe plant, slit the leaf lengthwise, and take out the gel inside. Clean the affected area, and apply the aloe to the burn or skin irritation. A rash may occur if you are allergic to aloe vera; if this happens, discontinue using it.
Step 2
Apply commercial preparations of pure aloe vera gel three to four times a day to treat sunburn or minor burns.
Step 3
Consume 0.04 to 0.17 g of dried aloe juice, or aloe latex, to help relieve constipation. Aloe latex, taken from the inside of the leaf, is sometimes consumed for constipation, but can cause severe cramps and diarrhea, and pregnant women should not consume aloe. Only use aloe for constipation under the supervision of a doctor.
