A bike trainer is the best way to stay in top cycling shape in the off-season or during inclement weather. The best bike trainer for you depends on your goals for indoor bike training. There are two basic types of trainers: resistance and rollers. Each has benefits and drawbacks that will help you decide which trainer is best for you.

Resistance Trainers

Resistance trainers are the most common type of bike trainer. They attach to your bike, normally at the rear hub, and hold it in place. The rear tire is then clamped against a wheel that offers resistance against the spinning tire. The best types of resistance trainer are fluid trainers and magnetic trainers. Fluid trainers offer dynamic resistance. In other words, as you pedal harder, resistance increases. Magnetic trainers offer static resistance.

Roller Trainers

Rollers are different from resistance trainers in several ways. First, they do not attach to your bike. Rather, the bike is set on top of them. Second, they do not hold your bike still but require that you balance as you ride. Though they don't offer the resistance of other trainer types, they provide a more realistic ride. Using rollers is similar to placing your bike on a treadmill, which is not recommended.

Effect on Bicycles

One consideration of choosing the best bike trainer is how it may negatively affect your bicycle. While bike trainers are designed to work with your bike without harming it, damage is possible. On resistance trainers, over-tightening the clamp on the rear hub can compress and damage bearings. Also, on resistance trainers, the rear wheel will receive increased wear from contact with the resistance wheel. Because rollers don't hold your bike still, falls and damage are more likely, especially when learning to use the trainers.

Considerations

Consider what benefits you want out of your bicycle trainer to choose the best one for you. If you want the most realistic and affordable ride, choose rollers. Choose a magnetic resistance trainer for the best combination of cost and training for bicycle fitness. Choose fluid resistance trainers for the most dynamic resistance training possible. Always use a mat below your trainer to avoid scratching or staining floors with oil and grease that may come from your bicycle.
