These colleges offer bachelor's and associate's degree programs, which can lead to careers as dietetic technicians or as registered dietitians. Depending on your specific career goals, these New England colleges can be good choices in your pursuit of nutrition education.
Labouré College
Labouré College is a Catholic college located in Dorchester, Massachusetts. The college maintains a nutrition, food management and dietetic technology program designed to enable students to become registered dietetic technicians. The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education and prepares students to take the registration exam required to become a dietetic technician. Students also have the opportunity to become certified in the National Restaurant Association's Servsafe Program while attending Labouré.
Simmons College
Simmons College, a private women-only liberal arts college in Boston, has three undergraduate degree programs in nutrition within their School of Nursing and Health Sciences -- nutrition and dietetics, nutrition and food science, and nutrition and food service management. Students at Simmons can also minor in nutrition. According to the school's website, the nutrition programs enable students to develop a knowledge base of the principles of food and nutrition sciences, as well as an understanding of scientific concepts implicated in the relationship between diet and health. Simmons' programs are CADE-accredited.
Lincoln College of New England
Students at Lincoln College of New England, located in Southington, Connecticut, can pursue an associate's degree with the goal of becoming a dietetic technician. The program, which is accredited by the CADE, includes 450 hours of supervised practical experience in the dietetic field. Graduates of the program are prepared for entry as employees in clinical, foodservice and community nutrition settings, and to take the national registration exam.
St. Joseph College
St. Joseph College of West Hartford, Connecticut is another women's liberal arts college providing a bachelor's degree in nutrition and dietetics. The program is accredited by the CADE, and graduates are prepared to participate in the required 900-hour practical internship and the registration examination. The didactic program in nutrition and dietetics is also available to second-degree students interested in pursuing a career in the field, but these students must apply for admission directly to the program.
