Extracts from the leaf of the olive tree as well as olive oil itself has been shown to have many benefits, ranging from antimicrobial activity to improving cholesterol levels. Olive leaves have been used as part of traditional medicine across the Mediterranean for centuries in herbal teas, tonics and extracts. As with all herbal remedies, extracts from olive leaves should be used to complement professional medical care rather than replace it.

Components

The major components of olive leaves are oleuropein and hydroxytyrosol, a derivative of the amino acid tyrosine. Both of these substances are also found in olive oil, although oleuropein makes up almost 10 percent of the mass of the leaves. In addition to lowering cholesterol and fighting microbes, these compounds can increase antioxidant capacity, lower blood pressure, lower blood sugar and reduce inflammation, according to a 2009 review published in "Nutrition Reviews."

Combating Heart Disease and Type 2 Diabetes

The risk factors for heart disease and type 2 diabetes are among the most troubling health concerns of the present time. Oleuropein's demonstrated reductions in blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure are central to preventing these diseases. In addition to changes in diet and exercise, olive leaf extract may complement medication in reducing the risk of coronary artery disease and type 2 diabetes in those already at risk.

Other Benefits

Oleuropein, hydroxytyrosol and many other phytochemicals in olive leaf extract and olive oil are potent antioxidant that may be beneficial in preventing oxidative damage associated with aging and diseases such as cancer. Hydroxytyrosol and related compounds have demonstrated antimicrobial activity against several infections in the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts.

Supplementation

Olive leaf extract has many of the same components as olive oil, reduced to a more concentrated form. There is currently no recommended dosage, as extracts used in many of the studies varied in potency and dosage. Olive leaf extract may be found as a powder, liquid or capsule, and label dosing instructions should be followed for each extract. Olive leaf extract will have the greatest benefit when combined with a healthy diet, such as the Mediterranean diet, and with a consistent exercise routine.

Caution

Olive leaf extract can lower blood sugar and blood pressure. Do not use if you already have low blood sugar or blood pressure, as these may fall too low. Although olive lead extract is generally considered safe, you should let your doctor know that you are taking it, because it may affect other medications.
