Losing weight is a difficult process. Even when it appears like you are doing everything correctly, results may seem slow. Numerous factors are involved with how quickly your body sheds pounds, and your concept of fast results may be unrealistic. The most sensible rate to lose weight is 1 to 2 lbs. per week, which results from taking in 500 to 1,000 calories per day less than you burn.
Metabolism
Hypothyroidism affects more than 26 million Americans with fewer than one-third receiving diagnosis and treatment, according to Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, writing on the "Psychology Today" website. Blood tests often produce inaccurate results, making diagnosis difficult. Symptoms include weight gain, low body temperature and sensitivity to cold, aches, fatigue and mental cloudiness. Discuss your options with your doctor if you have any of these symptoms.
Medications
Some medications may hinder your weight loss efforts. Antidepressants, steroids and birth-control pills are among the major culprits with side effects that slow weight loss efforts or may even cause weight gain. If your medication seems to be causing problems with your weight loss, talk with your doctor. She may swap your prescription for another with fewer side effects. Do not stop your medication without communicating with your physician first.
Medical Conditions
Many medical conditions have an impact on your ability to lose weight. Yeast overgrowth may cause sugar cravings, according Teitelbaum. Chronic sinusitis, spastic colon and weight gain are common results from yeast overgrowth. Insulin resistance may slow weight loss efforts, also. Food intolerance may cause weight issues, too. Soy, dairy, eggs and nuts are some common agitators. Talk to your doctor about using probiotics to aid digestion. Another possible condition linked to weight problems is a vitamin deficiency; taking a daily multivitamin may help.
Other Possibilities
Ditching diet soda and other artificially sweetened foods may help you lose weight faster. Getting enough sleep each night also plays a large role in your weight-loss efforts; sleep affects your body's production of appetite-controlling hormones. Eight to nine hours is enough. Also, drinking enough water may play a big role in weight loss. Drink at least 8 glasses per day to help with appetite suppression and to burn fat.
Calories
The number of calories you eat plays the largest role in how fast your body sheds pounds. Many people underestimate the number of calories ingested daily. Keep a journal of what you are eating each day for an accurate record. Remember, also that weight loss is a process and may take longer than you wish to reach your goals. Discuss your dietary needs with your doctor before you make any changes.
