The sport of volleyball is a game that is filled with leaping, spiking, diving and it is fun for all ages. Volleyball games have specific rules that are used to keep score, keep order and keep the game fair even in a fun game where students are battling their teachers.
Players And Rotation
Regulation competition volleyball requires six players per team on the court at a time. In some recreational games, it is common to see four players per side are used. Players are required to rotate in a clockwise manner each time their team wins the right to serve. The rotation occurs around the positions on the court, three of which are front positions that are by the net and three of which are back positions. In a four person game, two players play the front row and two play the back row. Rotations are designed to ensure that one player does not dominate the net or position and this makes it especially fair in a recreational game.
Scoring
The sport of volleyball now uses rally scoring, which means a point is awarded on every play regardless of which team served the ball. The team that wins the last point serves the next point, while the first serve can be determined with a coin flip or something to that effect. Volleyball games are played to 25 points and you must win by least two points. Regulation games play the best of three, meaning if you win two games you win the match.
Standard Rules
Each team may only hit the ball three times on their side of the net before they get it over the net or they lose the point. In addition, players may not hit the ball two times in a row, which means that they cannot hit the ball to themselves. The lines in volleyball are considered in bounds if a ball touches the line at all and balls may be played off the net on a serve or other hit.
Rule Violations
Players must not touch the net during play or their team will lose that point. In addition, players must not reach under the net or over the net. However, to follow through, or block players can reach over the net on their follow through. The serve must go over the net or the other team is awarded a point and teams must serve in the proper order. The server should always be the player that has just rotated from the front right position to the back right position on the court.
