Proper nutrition can play a key role in maintaining good health. The right diet can prove to be a vital factor in combating disease and other adverse health effects. Therefore, working with people who understand nutrition can be a good idea. Nutrition counseling can provide advice on how to improve your diet and improve your health.

Registered Dietician

When seeking nutritional advice, be sure to make sure that your nutritionist is a registered dietitian (RD). This ensures that the professional got the proper education and is qualified to be a consultant by the American Dietetic Association. In order to become an RD, you must complete the following criteria: complete a bachelor's degree at an accredited university, complete a supervised internship at an accredited health care facility lasting for six to 12 months, pass a national examination and complete the continuing educational requirements.

Work Locations

Registered dietitians can work in many different settings, though they are most commonly found in hospitals and health care facilities. Here, they consult and educate patients about proper nutrition and the proper way to eat for the patients' conditions. They may also oversee and operate the food service operations at these establishments. The other common places for RDs is in private practice. Here, RDs give private consultations, usually around 30 minutes long, where they advise patients about the proper diet.

Programs

Registered dietitians provide several different programs and services to patients. Personal nutrition counseling provides individual instructions related to age, activity level and medical condition. Weight-loss management programs are designed specifically for those patients in need of losing weight. A registered dietitian will provide techniques, healthier food options and advice to lose weight and generally improve overall health. Additionally, RDs can work with doctors in order to come up with a proper diet for someone with a severe condition such as celiac disease.

Insurance Coverage

While many private insurance companies are beginning to cover nutrition counseling, it varies from company to company and is not covered across the board. However, nutrition counseling is covered by Medicare.

Benefits

Nutrition consultation can help everyone. Whether you have a serious health condition, want to gain or lose weight, are pregnant or want to improve your athletic performance, nutrition counseling can help by constructing an individualized diet that will improve your health and overall well-being.
