Becoming a gym teacher usually requires a degree in physical education, exercise science or kinesiology, as well as a teaching certificate in your state of residence. Degree requirements vary slightly by school, but most educational plans include courses designed to teach you about the human body, how children develop motor skills and how to teach or coach various activities.
The Body
Most exercise science or kinesiology programs require courses that improve understanding of the body's systems, particularly muscular and cardiovascular, as well as the process for cellular metabolism. You can expect to take classes that include biology, anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, human pathophysiology and kinesiology. Some degree plans may require more classes in physics and chemistry.
Motor Development
Gym teachers need to understand the reasons why some children develop motor skills earlier than other kids, and why some activities aren't appropriate for children of all ages. Courses such as motor development, therapeutic recreation and adapted physical education cover the differences in motor skills and development in children of all ages and abilities.
Activities
You may think that teaching activities and games is easy, but gym teachers need to know how to break skills down into easily understood pieces of information. Activity classes at Texas State University include course requirements such as rhythm and movement activities and physical activities for elementary students, along with electives like badminton, field sports, volleyball, weight training and tumbling. At the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, students must take classes on activity methods, coaching theory and activity methods for secondary students.
Additional Course Work
To become a gym teacher, you'll probably have to fulfill additional degree requirements in areas like English, history, math and philosophy. You may have to choose a minor, taking courses within a secondary field such as business or nutrition. Many exercise science or kinesiology majors also must take foundational courses like introduction to exercise science and practicums designed to discuss issues and trends within the field of exercise and fitness.
