Iron and vitamin C are both essential to overall health. Iron assists in the production of hemoglobin, which is necessary to supply oxygen to red blood cells. Vitamin C supports the immune system. According to "Focus on Nursing Pharmacology," when vitamin C and iron are taken together, the body absorbs as much as 30 percent more iron than when iron is taken alone. Consult your physician prior to taking iron and vitamin C, or any other dietary supplements.
Step 1
Eat a meal or snack.
Step 2
Take your vitamin C and iron supplements immediately after eating. Usual doses are 500 mg of vitamin C and 65 mg of iron. Always take these supplements with food to avoid stomach upset, which can occur when taking these supplements on an empty stomach.
Step 3
Drink a large glass of water with your vitamin C and iron supplements. Plan on taking these supplements at the same time daily to ensure stable levels of them in your system.
