How to Feed a Family Cheap and Healthy Food

Many people have the misconception that feeding a family cheap food equates feeding a family unhealthy food. As a result, families who feel trapped by the high costs of groceries often resort to purchasing cheap, unhealthy food that lacks vital nutrients. By coupling knowledge of nutrition with shopping around and planning meals, you can feed your family inexpensive and nutritious meals.

Step 1

Buy nonperishable or frozen foods in bulk to save on cost. Purchase large quantities of food at discounts. For example, buy a quarter of a cow from a butcher. Brown rice and beans are often readily available at a reasonable price in the bulk department of health food stores.

Step 2

Stock up when nonperishable foods are on sale. Purchase canned fruits and vegetables, whole grain pasta, canned tuna and chicken and whole grain cereal in large quantities when on sale. Store these foods for future use.

Step 3

Plan your meals based upon the inexpensive and healthy foods listed in your store's sale flier and the stockpile of healthy foods you have at home.

Step 4

Keep inexpensive, healthy snacks readily available for trips and lunches. Apples, nuts, seeds, bananas and raisins are excellent, inexpensive and portable options.
