ESPN, a sport programming TV network, organizes an annual sporting event and competition called the Triple X Games. The twice-annual event features winter and summer games. Participants compete to win medals in various different competitions including motocross, skateboarding and BMX -- bike motor cross. The winter games include snowboarding and skiing. The X Games lacks the history of the Olympics; however, it's the only such event for lots of fast-paced extreme sports.
Inception
The event was first launched in 1995 and held in Rhode Island. The instantly popular event attracted more than 190,000 people. The events have been held every year since and attracted huge crowds without fail. In 1995 only summer games were held. The first ever X games winter competition was held in 1996 on Snow Summit Mountain in California. This became just as successful as the main summer games and so became a permanent event, held every year since.
TV Coverage
ESPN provided worldwide coverage of the X games beginning in 1997. In that year, the winter games were broadcast to almost 200 different countries in 21 different languages. The TV coverage allows millions who don't attend the X games in person to enjoy access to the events.any different countries. It wasn't until 1997 that these games were broadcast all around the world. The X games continue to rank as must-see TV for millions of extreme sports fans.
Locations
In 2010 the X Games were held in Shanghai, China, to further broaden the appeal of the games. This event was sponsored by Kia and was the most successful competition yet. There were almost 25,000 fans at the last day of the BMX competition. The 2011 winter X Games competition will be held in Tignes, France. This is a free event for spectators and there will be live music, X Fest and a demonstration using snowmobiles.
X Games Stars
The X-games may not be as well known as the Olympics, but it attracts many well-known celebrities and helps establish the reputations of rising sports stars. Skateboarding icon Tony Hawk, for example, rose to fame thanks to the games. He managed to win gold medals at the competitions for 10 years in a row. Without a competition like the X-games it can be argued that these extreme sporting stars simply would remain largely anonymous.
