What Are the Side Effects of the Abs Contour Belt?

The Ab Contour belt is one of the products included in the Ab Contour Core Sculpting System. Ab Contour is an electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) device, which means it sends a mild electrical impulse to force the contraction of muscle. The system utilizes electrodes to stimulate muscle movement similar to exercise. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates the marketing of these devices, and it does report some potential side effects. However, not all side effects may apply to every person who uses the belt. In general, the possible side effects from the Ab Contour belt are the same as they would be with any EMS device.

How the System Works?

The Ab Contour belt wraps around the stomach. Once activated, a mild shock comes from the belt. The electrical impulse stimulates the reflex of the muscles. The reflex movement is an autonomic response to the electrical charge. Muscle contraction is one component to muscle-building. Repetitive contractions stress muscles to the point of damage. The body will rebuild the muscle stronger to deal with the stress.

Allergic Reaction

The Ab Contour belt uses conductive gel pads. To protect skin from the current, you attach gel pads over the electrodes. One potential side effect is an allergic reaction to the material or chemical in the pad. During use, if you feel an itching sensation on the skin, stop the device and remove the belt. Some reddening of skin may be normal. Itchy skin or the presence of a rash may would indicate an allergic reaction to the gel pad. If the reaction is severe, discontinue using the product.

Burning

Burns are a distinct possibility from the Ab Contour belt, especially if the gel pads are worn or applied incorrectly. Read the instructions on the device closely. The pads protect your skin. If not positioned over the electrode, you may get burned. Pads can be used only a certain number of times. Follow the directions with the product for replacement of gel pads. Examine the pads prior to each use. Replace any pad that appears thin or worn.

Pain

The electrical stimulation from the Ab Contour belt can be uncomfortable. For this reason, this form of exercise may not be right for some. When the device sends an electrical impulse, you may feel mild discomfort, and with each contraction that discomfort may increase. If the action of the belt causes you pain, remove it immediately.

Pacemakers

You cannot use the Ab Contour belt, or any electrical stimulation device, if you have a pacemaker. The FDA reports that these devices can interfere with the rhythm of a pacemaker. Talk to your doctor if you are unsure whether the Ab Contour device is safe for you.
