Low blood sugar levels, also known hypoglycemia, are most common among diabetics. The American Diabetes Association reports that hypoglycemia may occur even when you are carefully managing your blood sugar levels, and that there are many characteristic symptoms that accompany this potentially dangerous condition, including shakiness, sweating and dizziness. Herbal treatments for this condition may be helpful, but you should check with your doctor before using herbs for your hypoglycemia.
Low Blood Sugar
Hypoglycemia, notes the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, is rare in children and adults over the age of 10, unless it is a side effect of diabetes treatment. The most definitive sign that you have hypoglycemia is a blood sugar reading of 70 mg/dL or lower. In addition to shakiness, sweating and dizziness, common signs and symptoms associated with hypoglycemia include cold sweats, an inability to sleep, blurred vision, tachycardia, confusion and skin numbness and tingling.
Important Herbal Remedies
Dr. Sharol Tilgner, a naturopathic physician, expert herbalist and author of "Herbal Medicine From the Heart of the Earth," states that four herbs may be particularly beneficial in treating hypoglycemia, including Siberian ginseng, licorice, oats and devil's club. When used together, these herbs may help you maintain normal glucose, or sugar, levels in your blood and treat the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Other effective herbs that may be helpful in normalizing your blood sugar levels include gentian root, gymnema and astragalus.
Featured Remedy
Siberian ginseng is a frequently prescribed herb in treating hypoglycemia. Siberian ginseng, notes Dr. Tilgner, is specific for hypoglycemic individuals, although this herb has also been used to boost your concentration and endurance, improve oxygen metabolism in your organs and tissues, and bolster your kidney and digestive health. Siberian ginseng, states the University of Maryland Medical Center, is a plant bearing yellow or violet flowers that may increase your mental health and social functioning.
Disclaimer
Hypoglycemia is a dangerous complication associated with diabetes and can lead to loss of consciousness. If you are diabetic, you should discuss treatment options to help manage your diabetes and avoid hypoglycemic states. Although herbal medicines have long been used to help stabilize, or normalize, blood sugar levels, not all herbs may be appropriate for you, especially if you have certain allergies or are taking certain prescription medications. Ask your healthcare provider what herbs you should take.
