The combination medication Combivent is made up of two drugs, albuterol and ipratropium, both of which act to help you breathe better if you have problems like chronic bronchitis, asthma, emphysema or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is available as a liquid to be inhaled through a nebulizer or as an aerosol.
Typical Serious Side Effects
The use of Combivent may induce some common side effects. You should consult your physician if you experience even one of these types of side effects. They include wheezing, aches throughout the body, abnormal weakness, chills, abnormal tiredness, a cough with or without mucus or phlegm, a sore throat, breathing difficulties, sneezing, congestion in the ears, shortness of breath, fever, runny nose, headaches, an inability to speak or congestion in the nose.
Non-Typical Serious Side Effects
According to the Mayo Clinic, some serious side effects were produced through Combivent usage. While rare, these side effects also require a consultation with your physician. They include facial swelling, pain in the chest, swelling of the lips, diarrhea, swelling of the throat or mouth, feeling generally ill or uncomfortable, a skin rash or hives, throat or voice hoarseness, swallowing difficulties, pain in the joints, swollen or tender neck glands, irregular heartbeat, decreased or absent appetite, excessive sweating, pain in the muscles, shivering, nausea, tender or painful areas around the cheekbones or eyes, rapid heartbeat or loud breathing.
Non-Serious Side Effects
Side effects including bodily tremors, taste changes, nervousness, dizziness and dry mouth are not serious but rarely may occur in patients who use Combivent. These side effects usually are temporary and go away on their own as your body acclimates to the medication. Call your physician if they continue or bother you. Other non-serious side effects that have been reported, according to the National Institute of Health, include cramps in the legs, constipation, frequent urination or difficult with urination, indigestion and changes in your voice.
