How Much Water Should You Drink for Weight Loss?

When you are trying to lose weight, it is very important that you drink plenty of water. The body is comprised of 70 percent water, water is a fundamental part of life, and fluid replenishment should not be neglected. Water can increase the metabolism by up to three percent, which is beneficial for weight loss.

Water and Fat Metabolism

Water can keep you feeling fuller for longer and reduce the tendency to overeat. If you fail to drink enough water it can reduce the rate in which your body burns fat. The kidneys need water to function effectively, if the kidneys do not get enough water the liver has to work harder. Therefore, causing the body to store fat.

Drinking more Water

Many people eat instead of drinking water as their thirst is mistaken for hunger. Often enough your hunger pains are actually your body telling you it needs water. When you feel those slight hanger pains reach for a bottle of water. Instead of drinking soda or eating a bag of potato, chips have a glass of water first. You might still feel those hunger pains but you will be less likely to over indulge.

Research

In 2000 research was carried out by Virginia Tech. The research showed that people who consumed 16 --oz of water prior to eating lost nearly 6 lbs. more than those that did not drink water, over a 12-week period.

Recommended Daily Amount

You should be consuming enough water so that you are never thirsty. You should also aim to pass about six large cups of clear urine. This should equate to one large glass of water every hour and a half.

Considerations

Although water is essential for the health, you should not overdo it. Drinking too much water can damage the kidneys. Consuming too much water can cause a condition called proteinuria, which is common in people who drink more than 4 liters of water on a daily basis.
