Everyone who undergoes U.S. Army basic training is required to pass a physical fitness test (PFT) to graduate from boot camp. A passing score for basic training varies, depending on gender and age. The PFT includes three sections: a pushup test, a situp test and a 2-mile run.

Pushups

The pushup test is administered first. Soldiers have 2 minutes to do as many as possible. The minimum number of pushups required to pass the test for those ages 17 to 21 is 35 for males and 13 for females. A male between 22 and 26 must do 31 pushups, a female must be able to do 11. These scores are worth 50 points, the lowest possible score to pass the pushup test. For a perfect score of 100 points males ages 17 to 21 must do 71 pushups, and females must do 42. Males ages 22 to 26 have to do 75 pushups for a perfect score, while females must be able to do 46.

Situps

The situp test is the second section of the PFT. Both males and females between 17 and 21 must do 47 situps in 2 minutes, while those between ages 22 and 26 must do 43. A perfect situp scores of 100 requires 78 situps for those ages 17 to 21 and 80 for those between 22 and 26 years old.

Run

The final section of the PFT is the 2-mile run. For those ages 17 to 21, men must complete the run within 16 minutes 36 seconds; women must complete it within 19:42 for a 50-point minimum passing score. For those ages 22 to 26, men must complete the run within 17:30, women within 20:36. For a 100-point perfect score, men of either age group must complete the run in 13 minutes. Women of either age group must complete it within 15:36.

Time Limit

Although pushup and situp sections of the PFT are capped at 2 minutes each, the 2-mile run has no specific cap. However, the PFT overall is capped at 60 minutes. As soon as a soldier completes one section of the test, he immediately begins the next section.
