The basic principles of weight loss are simple, but putting them into practice is an entirely different matter. Successful weight loss takes a serious commitment, and it's inevitable that your motivation will wane from time to time. Whether you're starting a weight-loss program for the first time or just looking for ways to shake up your usual routine, a few innovative ideas can help you make it through your toughest weight-loss challenges.

Use Your Passions

If doing something you loved could help you lose weight, there's no doubt you'd make more time for it in your life. So, think about how your hobbies and passions could help you live a healthier or more active lifestyle. If you love to cook, treat yourself to some low-calorie cookbooks or experiment with healthy ingredients to create new meals; if dancing is your passion, try a dance class twice a week and spend your Friday and Saturday nights at your favorite club; and if hanging with your girlfriends is your idea of a good time, meet them at the local park to gossip while you walk or bike instead of chatting over drinks.

Get Support

Even with the best of intentions, it's easy to let domestic responsibilities get in the way of a workout routine and healthy home cooking. To minimize these disturbances, talk to your husband, children and other family members about how they can help you stick to your good habits. That might mean getting your husband to agree to take the kids every Saturday morning so you can go to the gym, or asking your teenager to help you chop vegetables for dinner so you won't be tempted to order a pizza. Getting support from the people around you is crucial when you're trying to make positive changes in your life.

Cook Healthier

Instead of trying to forgo your favorite foods altogether, try whipping up healthier versions at home. You can save hundreds of calories by skipping the delivery pizza and making your own using low-fat cheese and plenty of vegetables. Or, skip the greasy restaurant version of a cheeseburger and fries and create your own by grilling lean ground beef patties and baking potato wedges in the oven. These methods help you satisfy cravings for your favorite foods without taking in an entire day's worth of calories in a single meal.

Watch Out for Weekends

Weekends are the time when most people relax, spend time with friends and family, and, often, let themselves eat the foods they avoid all week long. There's nothing wrong with indulging in a rich dessert, a fancy meal or a few cocktails with friends, but treating the entire weekend as an eating and drinking free-for-all can easily negate the healthy eating and exercising you do all week. Let yourself have one special treat, no matter how many calories it has, and then find other ways to enjoy the weekends. Ideas include shopping, getting a massage, browsing in your favorite bookstore or having a movie night with your friends.
