Happiness & Weight Loss

Although to some it may seem trite or even insulting, weight loss actually can lead to happiness. However, the reasons for this have much less to do with appearance and the social pressures of beauty norms than people may think. The significant mental and physical health benefits received from healthy weight loss are more likely responsible for the improved moods and reduced anxiety associated with happiness. In other words, your weight loss methods need to be healthy and safe to gain the benefits of improved emotional health.

Exercise

Exercise is not only an essential element of any weight loss plan, but also remarkably effective at improving moods and decreasing anxiety, even in individuals suffering from severe depression. A study by the National Institutes of Health found that frequent exercise was just as effective as antidepressant medications at alleviating depression. Exercise releases beneficial endorphins and neurotransmitters into your brain that can increase your feelings of happiness while you burn excess calories.

Nutrition

Exercise alone isn't as effective for weight loss as reducing caloric intake in your diet along with it. It is essential to both your physical and mental health that you maintain a healthy and nutritious diet. According to the Oct. 8, 2009, New York Times article titled "Nutrition: Lower Depression Risk Linked to Mediterranean Diet," a nutritionally complete and heart-healthy diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, legumes and healthy monounsaturated fats, was linked to reduced risk of depression. Make calorie reduction and weight loss goals part of a dietary lifestyle change to improve your overall physical and mental health.

Health Concerns

Individuals with serious concerns about their physical health tend to be at higher risk for depression and anxiety, notes Lisa Renn, the Dietitians Association of Australia spokeswoman. If you are overweight, you may be worried about increased risk for cardiovascular problems and chronic conditions, such as diabetes. In addition, you may have difficulty breathing and more problems with back and joint pain. Obviously, these types of concerns could get in the way of anyone's happiness. Lifestyle changes, such as improved diet and increased physical activity, can help alleviate health concerns and the anxiety that often accompanies them.

Additional Considerations

Always consult a physician before starting an exercise program or restrictive diet. While exercise can be effective at reducing the symptoms of depression, you should immediately seek medical help if you experience severe symptoms, such as suicidal thoughts. Additionally, avoid fad diets with extremely restrictive rules about food groups or daily caloric intake. These can be dangerous and leave you malnourished.
