If you are not sure what to eat, there are certain foods that should be on the top of your list. Eating healthy can help you maintain a normal weight, which can help to prevent chronic illnesses such as heart disease, obesity or diabetes. When you go to the grocery store, make sure healthy food options are on your grocery list.

Whole Grain Products

Whole grain and whole grain products are high in fiber. They make you feel full and are satisfying. Whole grains are a great substitute for refined carbohydrates like pastas, white flour, white bread or white rice. Make sure that whole grains such as whole grain rice, quinoa, and barley are on your weekly grocery list. Whole grain breads, cereals and crackers are also available.

Fruits and Vegetables

Many people know that fruits and vegetables are healthy; yet, most do not eat enough on a daily basis. Make sure that you have a variety of fruits and vegetables available for your meals and snacks throughout the week. Fruits and vegetables are a great option for snacks, and they should be a part of every meal, too. Select a variety and change what you buy every week. Try frozen fruit or vegetables that do not have added sodium or sugar when your favorites are out of season. Dried fruit is great to take along as a snack. Canned vegetables may have sodium, so make sure you rinse them prior to using.

Lean Proteins

Some animal products may contain a lot of fat. Buy chicken without the skin or fish. Make sure that on some days you have beans, tofu or another source of vegetable protein. Eating lean protein helps you maintain your weight, and helps to prevent high cholesterol. Make sure you keep your protein choice healthy by not frying or using fat to cook it.

Non Fat or Low Fat Dairy

There are plenty of non-fat or low-fat dairy options available in the grocery stores. This includes milk, creamer, yogurt, and even cheese. Although it may take time to get used to, sticking with low-fat or non-fat dairy decreases the amount of calories from fat you take in. This can help you maintain a healthy weight and cholesterol level.
