Precor is a well-known name in the fitness equipment market and is synonymous with quality elliptical trainers. The company's EFX series of ellipticals, in particular its EFX 5.23, 5.33 and 5.25, has been well received by the industry. The three machines offer a number of different features, but all deliver a quality, gym-like elliptical experience.

Precor EFX 5.25

The 2011 model of the Precor EFX 5.25 was rated the top high-end elliptical trainer by the product review website Fitness-Equipment-Source.com. The EFX 5.25 model borrows heavily from the 5.17i model with the addition of arm handles that operate independently of the the foot pedals. Its rear drive flywheel design aims to provide stability and its power incline feature is adjustable from 15 to 25 degrees. The 5.25 offers many of the advanced features of a Precor commercial elliptical but its frame design is specifically made for home use.

Precor EFX 5.33

AllEllipticals.com named the Precor EFX 5.33 the best elliptical machine and a best value buy. As with most Precor models, the EFX 5.33 has an adjustable incline. Its patented CrossRamp Technology allows you to change the incline from 15 to 30 degrees. The console's computer features an LED color monitor, a heart rate monitor and 14 preset programs. The flywheel provides up to 20 different resistance levels and the stride length is adjustable from 21 to 23 inches. A 10-year parts warranty accompanies the elliptical trainer.

Precor EFX 5.23

The product review website EllipticalTrainers.com named the Precor EFX 5.23 as its "Best Buy" pick for high-end, commercial ellipticals. The website's rating is based on overall machine quality, product performance, customer feedback and company reputation. The EFX 5.23 features a rear drive flywheel system and can accommodate users weighing up to 300 lbs. An LED monitor displays preset program information as well as heart rate data sent via grip pulse or a wireless system. Its warranty covers the frame for the life of the machine, parts and wear items for 10 years, and labor for one year.

Considerations

Some factors to consider when shopping for an elliptical trainer include the machine's drive system, features and warranty. A rear drive system places the flywheel in the back and typically provides more support and stability due to the even weight distribution. A key feature to look for is arm handles that operate through a resistance system separate of the foot pedals. This provides a more effective upper body workout. Another feature to consider is a power incline system, which allows you to exercise continuously while resistance and incline adjustments are made automatically. Finally, a good warranty for an elliptical covers the life of the frame and offers at least three to five years for parts.
