An EZ bar is an alternative to a standard barbell. It is most commonly used for biceps curls, but can be used for a number of exercises, including triceps extensions and presses. The EZ bar is shaped differently than a standard barbell and is more comfortable for some individuals.
EZ Bar
An EZ bar is shorter and lighter than a regular barbell. They vary in length, but a typical EZ bar is 4 feet long and weighs between 20 and 30 lbs. EZ bars are available in a standard or Olympic version. A standard EZ bar has 1-inch weight sleeves and an Olympic EZ bar has 2-inch weight sleeves. An EZ bar has several angled grips in the middle.
Function
Doing bicep curls with a regular barbell can cause some lifters pain in their wrists. A standard bar forces your wrists into a locked, supine position. With an EZ bar, you grip the angled parts of the bar, allowing your hands to be turned slightly in. This reduces the stress to your wrist joints and places your arms in a more natural, relaxed position.
EZ Bar Curl
Grab the bar with a slightly less than shoulder-width grip, with your palms facing up. Start with your arms fully extended and the bar resting in front of your thighs. Lock your elbows into your sides. Do not allow them to move forward. Curl the weight up. Don't use your lower back or momentum to move the weight. Lower the barbell slowly then repeat.
Considerations
An EZ bar has several curves and grip placement options. Move your hands closer or farther away as needed to find the most comfortable grip for you. Not every lifter finds the EZ bar more comfortable than a standard barbell. It will depend on your wrist strength and flexibility. The EZ bar is not inherently better than a barbell, it is just an alternative if you find a barbell uncomfortable to hold.
