Keeping a clean colon is essential for healthy living. Your colon is the organ that absorbs nutrients, vitamins, fats, proteins, carbohydrates and water from the foods that you eat. In order for the foods and beverages you eat to be properly digested, you must have a clean colon. Avoid commercial colon cleansing products, and keep your colon clean naturally.

Step 1

Set a goal to eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Fruits and vegetables are high in fiber. Fiber is not digested and acts as a sponge that sweeps through the colon as it passes through. In addition, regular consumption of fruits and vegetables will provide you with necessary vitamins and nutrients that will keep you healthy.

Step 2

Choose complex carbohydrates instead of simple carbohydrates. Complex carbohydrates, such as brown rice, brown pasta and whole grain breads, are high in fiber, which will clean your colon. In addition, complex carbohydrates prevent irregularities in blood sugar levels, which can help prevent or control diabetes. Avoid white rice, white breads and white pastas.

Step 3

Drink at least eight glasses of fluids per day. Drinking adequate fluids will flush toxins out of your colon to keep it clean. It will also help prevent constipation because it will help your stool stay loose. Choose healthy beverages, such as unsweetened teas, water and coffee.
