Pilates is known for its transformative effects on a person's body, particularly for toning the core and legs. While some Pilates exercises can be performed without machinery, these exercises can often be enhanced by utilizing a Pilates machine. There are a variety of machine manufacturers and styles, but Pilates machines have several aspects in common that help to provide the exerciser with desired results.

The Reformer

The Pilates reformer is the most commonly known Pilates machine in use. While the machines may vary based on the manufacturer, the reformer generally includes a wooden base that supports a sliding platform. Most reformers also feature pulleys or springs of adjustable strengths, making the reformer ideal for a variety of Pilates practitioners.

Other Pilates Machines

The Cadillac is similar to the reformer, but it features a cage-like top portion. This can also utilize pulleys or springs in order to exercise the legs and arms at different angles. Exercises performed on a Cadillac include leg lifts and arm pulls. The Wunda Chair is another Pilates machine that features a step-like box with handles on either side of the box. This allows a person to perform exercises such as lunges and squats while also emphasizing stability.

Benefits

Using a Pilates machine can enhance a person's Pilates practice, because it adds elements of resistance to the exercises. This enhances strength, range of motion and alignment in the body. The Pilates reformer also enhances core strength, which includes the stomach, lower- and mid-back, and hips. If the exercises are performed in a smooth and quick succession, it also can promote cardiovascular health.

Cost

Pilates machine costs vary and are based on a number of factors; however, the general prices range from $1,500 to $4,000. Manufacturers include Gratz Pilates, Stott Pilates, Balanced Body and Peak Pilates. When shopping for a Pilates reformer, look for a platform that moves easily and has adjustable springs and sturdy straps.

Considerations

Pilates is a low-impact, gentle form of exercise that helps to lower stress and boost strength and flexibility. For this reason, Pilates machines are suitable for a wide variety of exercisers. These include those with cardiac conditions, osteoarthritis sufferers, women in early stages of pregnancy, and those with diabetes who may otherwise not be able to engage in more strenuous exercise.
