In the world of fitness, a strong and developed core is paramount. One of the most popular ways to quickly develop your core is using an exercise ball. For maximum benefit and safety, both height and weight should be considered when choosing the correct size exercise ball. A person weighing more than 200 lbs. must be more careful when selecting what size and type of exercise ball to use. Reading the fine print can alert you to whether your exercise ball can support your weight.

Choosing an Exercise Ball

Most exercise balls come with an established weight capacity. Exceeding the weight capacity of your exercise ball can be dangerous. When weight capacity is exceeded proper support is not available and these workout balls have been known to burst when taken beyond their limits. There are five exercise ball sizes. The sizes are made to suit the height and weight of the user. However, no matter what size ball you use, make certain that the cumulative weight of your body and any weights you may use all equal less than the maximum weight capacity.

Weight Limits

Weight limits vary from one exercise ball to the next. The maximum capacity should always be presented clearly on the package or on the ball itself. If you tip the scale at 200 lbs., an exercise ball with that capacity may not be the best choice for you. Because holding dumbbells and other weights can easily take you above the weight capacity of the ball. The weight limits are referring to the amount of pressure the ball can withstand. Therefore, a 200 lb. person can generate more than the capacity by simply rocking on the ball and holding dumbbells. Some exercise balls have a maximum capacity of 600 lbs. and more. Be sure to take into account your body weight as well as the activity being performed as this may increase the pressure on the ball.

Exercise Ball Sizes

Because its important to maintain good form and posture while using an exercise ball, the proper size is necessary. Be sure to match your height and weight to the ball size and weight capacity. Exercise balls are made in five different sizes -- 45 cm, 55 cm, 65 cm, 75 cm and 85 cm. All five ball sizes are available in weight capacities of 200 lbs. to 600 lbs.

Burst Resistant Balls

Burst resistant balls maximize the safety of an exercise ball workout. There can be many causes for a bursting ball. Debris on the floor or a zipper on your workout clothing can cause a rupture. However, burst resistant balls are designed to slowly deflate in the event they are punctured. Balls that are not burst resistant may suddenly pop. When this happens, there is no support for the body and the user rapidly hits the floor. Make sure that the exercise ball you use has a burst resistant capacity that is above your body weight. This will enable the ball to still support the user while it is slowly deflating.
