Psoriatic arthritis is a kind of arthritis, affecting those with psoriasis. Most people are diagnosed with psoriasis and then develop psoriatic arthritis, though arthritis can appear first in some cases, according to the Mayo Clinic. The symptoms related to arthritis include joint pain, stiffness and swelling, upsetting random parts of the body. While periods of remission can occur, no cures for psoriatic arthritis exist. However, treatment with certain herbs can reduce symptoms.
Ginger
Ginger is not only a culinary component; it is also a widely used medicinal herb, formulated for supplementation in extracts, capsules, tablets and teas. Most common medicinal uses of ginger may include treating stomach ailments, such as nausea and diarrhea. According to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM), cold and flu supplements sold in the United States often contain ginger extract. Due to its anti-inflammatory action, ginger is also used to treat various forms of arthritis, making it beneficial for reducing swelling and joint pain among psoriatic arthritis sufferers.
Feverfew
Feverfew, a flowering plant used as a medicinal herb, may be best known today for its use among migraine sufferers, helping to prevent migraines by decreasing inflammation in the blood vessels and lessening the pain of the headaches. The anti-inflammatory action of the plant is useful for treating a host of condition, however. For centuries the herb has been a valuable remedy for fevers, headaches, tooth and stomach aches, insect bites, infertility and menstrual complications. According to the NCCAM, feverfew has also become a remedy for allergies, asthma, ringing in the ear (tinnitus) psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis. The anti-inflammatory agent present in feverfew makes it an alternative option for treating psoriatic arthritis.
Turmeric
Turmeric is an ancient constituent to Ayurvedic medicine (an ancient Indian system of health). Commonly used to treat inflammatory disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, the herb may be useful for reducing swelling, stiffness and pain, such as is common with psoriatic arthritis. The anti-inflammatory properties present in turmeric make it a beneficial supplement for both treatment and prevention of joint inflammation and pain, according to Arthritis Today.
