As a man ages, he goes through a period of prostate growth, leading to enlarged prostate. The condition, also known as BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia), is accompanied by bothersome symptoms like frequent urination, particularly at night, painful urinating and increased pressure in the bladder. Alpha blockers are commonly used medications for the treatment of enlarged prostate, however, some herbs may be just as valuable, shrinking the prostate and reducing the symptoms.
Saw Palmetto
Saw palmetto, a small palm tree native to the Southeastern Unites States, produces fruit used for medicinal purposes. The herb is available in various supplemental forms like liquid extract, capsules, tablets and teas. Mainly used to treat urinary symptoms associated with enlarged prostate, the herb is also a remedy for chronic pelvic pain, sexual dysfunction, bladder disorders, hormone imbalances and hair loss, according to the National Center for Complimentary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). Mild side effects include stomach discomfort.
Pygeum
Pygeum is a medicinal herb and aphrodisiac, used in Africa for many years for the treatment of enlarged prostate. Popular in Europe, the bark of the Prunus Africana tree is a remedy for discomfort and inflammation related to enlarged prostate conditions. While side effects are few, gastrointestinal upset may occur with use, including nausea, diarrhea and constipation. When combined with saw palmetto and stinging nettle, the herb is shown to have increased benefits, according to Medline Plus. Combination supplements are available over-the-counter.
Stinging Nettle
Stinging nettle, a shrub found all over the world, is an old remedy used as a diuretic and joint pain remedy. The prickly plant's spines possess pain-relieving abilities. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), the herb was also used among those with eczema, anemia and arthritis. Today, its uses include treating urinary conditions, hay fever, tendonitis, insect bites and enlarged prostate. Studies show the herb is effective at relieving symptoms associated with enlarged prostate, such as reduced urinary flow, post urination dribbling, frequent urinary urgency and incomplete emptying of the bladder, when combined with saw palmetto and other herbs, according to the UMMC. Though the herb is considered safe, side effects may include mild stomach upset, fluid retention and allergic reactions.
