Risperidone is used with the brand name Risperdal Consta and may be used as an intravenous medication to help in the treatment of psychotic disorders. Risperdal Consta, for example, may be used to treat schizophrenia, a psychosis in which patients may not be able to recognize what is real and what is not. Other drugs, such as valproate and lithium, may be used with Risperdal Consta in the treatment of bipolar disorder or manic depression. According to the Mayo Clinic, Risperdal Consta should not be used in elderly patients who suffer from dementia because it could kill them.
Typical Non-Serious
If you are injected with Risperdal Consta to treat schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, you may temporarily experience some relatively common side effects. These likely will vanish as you become accustom to the drug. You won’t need to tell your doctor about them unless you continue to experience them for an extended period or if they bother you. The most common side effects of Risperdal Consta, according to the Mayo Clinic, are stomach problems such as acidity or sourness, stomach pain, discomfort in the stomach, heartburn or belching.
Less Common Non-Serious
Risperdal Consta also may induce some other temporary side effects that may rarely occur in patients. Again, you likely will not need to talk to a medical professional about them unless they persist. These rarer side effects include uncommon ejaculation; lowered libido; lowered ability at sexual performance; changes in the menstrual cycle; skin blemishes; hearing changes; eyes that itch or burn or feel dry; lessened ability to see; thinning or loss of hair; pain in the ear or a discharge from the ear. Patients may rarely experience a gain or loss of weight; insomnia; spinning sensations; toothaches; breast milk that is excessive or uncommon and facial or eye area swelling. There also may be some problems at the site of injection including tingling; bleeding; warmth; blisters; scarring; swelling; hives; lumps; inflammation; stinging or other sensations.
Serious
Risperdal Consta also may cause many side effects that are serious and you will need medical help if you experience them. These types of effects include swallowing difficulties, hand or finger trembling or speech slurring. Other serious side effects are unusual motion of the neck, head, mouth or face; restlessness; walking with a shuffle; anxiety; pain in the bladder; depression; breathing difficulties; convulsions; diarrhea or urine discoloration. Some people find that their sensation of touch may become lessened or abnormal as well. Patients should contact a doctor if they experience pain in the back; inability to control the bladder function; muscle problems such as pain, weakness or stiffness; irritability; hyperventilation; fever; hunger; thirst; decreased appetite; nausea; side or lower back pain; vomiting; abnormal bruising; bleeding; expressions or weakness and tiredness, among many others.
