Hemorrhoids affect the anus and lower rectum and occur as inflamed and swollen veins. Hemorrhoids may result from increased pressure on the veins during pregnancy or from straining during bowel movements. Symptoms of hemorrhoids include pain, discomfort, itching in the anal region, leakage of feces or a lump near the anal region. Certain medications and lifestyle alterations may help prevent and treat hemorrhoids. In addition, some herbs may be helpful. Always consult a doctor before taking herbal supplements and never replace other forms of treatment with herbal remedies.
Goldenrod
Goldenrod is often used as a diuretic and for wound healing. This herb can also be used as a topical cream to decrease the inflammation of hemorrhoids. Animal and test tube studies have indicated its beneficial role in reducing inflammation, muscle spasms and blood pressure, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center. However, no human studies have been done and more research is required. Check with your doctor to determine if this herb may benefit you.
Roman Chamomile
Roman chamomile is an herb traditionally used to treat excess intestinal gas, vomiting, nausea and heartburn. When used as a topical agent, this herb can also decrease the inflammation that occurs with hemorrhoids. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends an effective dose as a cream with 3 percent to 10 percent chamomile. Check with your doctor to determine if this herb may benefit you.
Blond Psyllium
Blond psyllium is another herb that may be useful for hemorrhoid treatment. This herb helps soften stool. MedlinePlus reports that evidence shows the herb may be as effective as senna or docusate sodium in providing constipation relief. A reduction in constipation can help prevent the straining of bowel movements associated with hemorrhoids. MedlinePlus recommends an effective dose of 7 g to 40 g of blond psyllium seed per day, in two to four separate doses. Consume plenty of water while taking this herb -- 240 mL of water for every 5 g of blond psyllium husk or 7 g of blond psyllium seed. Check with your doctor to determine if this herb may benefit you.
Witch Hazel
Using the herb witch hazel may help shrink hemorrhoids and relieve symptoms on a temporary basis. You may experience this benefit if you use the herb in a sitz bath or as a topical agent. A topical cream may help decrease symptoms of itching and can be applied with cotton swabs. Check with your doctor to determine if this herb may benefit you.
