A cataract is a clouding of the usually clear lens of your eye. The effects of cataracts are similar to looking through a foggy window. Cataracts are not painful but they may cause sensitivity to light, fading or yellowing of colors, and a single eye may experience double vision. Cataracts typically start slowly and gradually worsen over a period of time until vision is impaired to the point of needing glasses and possibly surgery. An over-the-counter eye drop medication known as Similasan may temporarily alleviate some of these symptoms. Similasan Cataract Care eye drops are to be used only after a doctor has diagnosed cataracts in your eyes. If you wear contact lenses talk to your doctor about any special instructions. The eye drops should be used 4 to 5 times each day. Your symptoms may worsen briefly when you first use this medication.
The manufacturers of Similasan say the Food and Drug Administration oversees homeopathic medicines and requires that manufacturers abide be established guidelines for the formulation and production of homeopathic medications. The homeopathic remedies in this plant-based medication can temporarily diminish many of the symptoms associated with cataracts.
Cineraria Maritima
The cineraria maritima (a native perennial of the Mediterranean region with white woolly stems and leaves) contained in Similasan treats cloudy and blurry vision, faded colors and glare and halos that appear around light. In 1997, the Council for Research in Homoeopathy Ministry of Health & Family Welfare in India endorsed cineraria maritima for the prevention and treatment of early cataracts.
Phorphorous
The phosphorous (essential for bone and nerve function and acid regulation) in the eye drops is intended to temporarily treat alleviate halos and glare as well as eye weakness and fatigue. This mineral-based ingredient in Similasan is also used to clear cloudy and blurry vision as well as floaters (black dots) and gray or faded colors.
Conium Maculatum
Conium maculatum (large alkaloid containing biennial herb native to Eurasia and Africa with white flowers and fern-like leaves) is used to relieve double vision, excessive tearing poor night vision, fatigue, induced black spots and eye discomfort that is caused by reading. This ingredient may also lessen the red appearance of objects and sensitivity to light. Conium maclulatum has also been indicated for the swelling and redness associated with styes (bacterial infection in the eyelash or eyelid).
