A jump rope is a simple tool that can help you lose weight. Jump ropes are affordable and easy to travel with, making it an exercise that can be done anywhere, indoors or out. Jumping rope is an effective form of cardiovascular exercise that can be included in a weight-loss program. Jumping rope burns approximately 730 calories per hour for a 160-pound person. Consult your doctor before beginning any diet or fitness program.

Benefits

Jumping rope helps improve cardiovascular endurance. It tones your legs, abs and biceps, helping to improve your appearance. Exercising regularly with a jump rope can also lower your risk of heart disease.

A Plan

Spend a few days each week jumping rope if you want to lose weight. You should exercise for 20 minutes or more each time to burn enough fat and calories to support your weight-loss efforts. Experiment with different styles of jump rope, including leather and rubber ropes. You can jump with two feet or skip on one foot for a while and switch feet. You can skip lightly from right foot to left, or travel forward and backward while jumping.

Difficulties

It can be difficult to jump rope if you haven't done it in a long time. Start slowly and add a minute or two each time. It is OK if you trip over the rope. Don't get discouraged. You could also drop the rope and pretend to jump in place without the rope until your endurance improves. Once you become more fit, you can begin jumping with the rope again.

Safety

Be sure you are using your jump rope in an area with ample space. You need clearance on all sides and above you. Make sure there are no hazardous objects on the floor in case of a fall. If you experience any pain or dizziness, stop exercising and consult your physician.
