Backyard trampolines are not only for children. You can use a trampoline as part of your fitness program. If you enjoy the benefits of trampoline jumping such as improved cardiovascular health, core strength and coordination, but do not want to purchase a large trampoline, an indoor mini-trampoline can provide the same benefits at a reduced cost and does not require large storage space.
Cardiovascular
Cardiovascular, or aerobic, exercises are ones that increase your heart rate for an extended duration, such as 30 to 45 minutes. Jumping on a trampoline is considered a cardiovascular exercise and one that you may look forward to because of the fun. Along with jumping, you can also jog, hop, twist, or do jumping jacks or cross country ski motions to add variation to your workout.
Core Strength
The muscles in your core are used to keep you upright when bouncing on a trampoline. The unstable surface of a trampoline causes your body to engage your stomach and back muscles so that you do not fall over. On a large trampoline you can jump and tuck your knees to your chest for a specific core exercise. You can lie on both a large or mini-trampoline to perform abdominal crunches or situps. The unstable platform will increase the challenge of these core conditioning exercises.
Coordination
Exercising on a trampoline will also improve your coordination. You cannot let your mind wander during trampoline exercise as a wrong step may result in you falling off the platform. Your focus and coordination are challenged further when you perform single leg exercises such as hopping on one foot. You can hop up and down, forward and backward or side to side to help improve your coordination.
Group Exercise
Exercise classes are available that use mini-trampolines in a group setting. The instructor will use music to motivate you and she will guide you through a workout that may contain basic jumping moves or combinations of moves into choreography. Your workout may also include strength training, such as squats or pushups on the trampoline.
